What Makes Mansfield MA Special

Town of Mansfield Massachusetts

In Bristol County, MA, Mansfield is a town of 23,860 individuals, according to the 2020 census.

Its sister city is Mansfield in Nottinghamshire, England and the village of Mansfield Center is found in the Massachusetts town.

The History of Mansfield

The incorporation of
Mansfield, MA, occurred on August 23, 1775. However, the town had a long history prior to that date. Captain Miles Standish arrived in 1640 and was the first white man to survey the land purchased from the Massachusetts Bay Colony three years prior. Settlers arrived in 1685, and the town grew.

In 1710, the town established its first recorded school, but the settlers did not construct the first schoolhouse until 1793.

They built many churches of different faiths in the town over the years, and these two institutions were of great importance to the town’s growth.

However, it would not have succeeded without the local mill and iron works.

The town also had a furnace that cast shot and cannon for the Continental Army and a tack and nail manufacturer.

Basket makers contributed to the town’s economy, as did cotton mills.

There were many other entrepreneurs living in Mansfield over the years that brought money into the local economy.
In 1835, the Anti-Slavery Riot took place in Mansfield. This riot led to anti-slavery sentiment increasing rapidly in the town.
Today, the town is known for being home to the Xfinity Center, a popular concert venue in the region.

In addition, it is where Honey Dew Donuts started back in 1973.

Mansfield Demographics

As previously mentioned, the 2020 United States Census found that 23,860 people called Mansfield home as of April 2020. Sixty-five percent of the residents were between the ages of 18 and 65. Of these individuals, 87 percent were white and two percent were black.

Six percent reported they were Asian, and almost four percent declared they were of Hispanic or Latino heritage. Nine percent stated they were foreign born.

Between the period of 2017 and 2021, there were 8,707 households in Mansfield, with 2.72 individuals in each household.

Owners occupied seventy-five percent of the homes, and the median value of these homes was $456,300.

Ninety-five percent of individuals 25 or older during this time period possessed a high school diploma, and 53 percent held a bachelor’s degree or higher.

Mansfield is unique in that the town is home to more people who work in computers and math than most of the country. It lands in the top five percent of places in America for residents working in these fields.
