Sebastian’s History


Back in 1715, a fleet of Spanish ships was sunk off the Treasure Coast—and only part of the lost treasure has been discovered, with the entire haul having an estimated value exceeding $500 million. Sebastian has existed as a fishing village since the 1870s, but it was officially founded in 1882 and incorporated in 1923. Pelican Island, which is close by, was declared the United States’ first wildlife refuge in 1903.
