The Many Attractions of Easton, MA

Taunton Massachusetts Town

Easton isn’t a big town in Massachusetts, but it is notable for being the birthplace of Ruth Graves Wakefield, the creator of the Toll House chocolate chip cookie.

In addition, many players from the New England Patriots have lived in this town or continue to do so, alongside NHL stars, baseball players, and more.

In Bristol County, MA, Easton has a population of 25,058, according to the 2020 census.

The History of Easton

Early settlers of Massachusetts visited Easton to hunt, fish, and lumber before returning to their homes in nearby Taunton.

People permanently settled in the area in 1695, and Easton was established as a town 30 years later.

The early community split over where the town meeting house should be located.

A bog iron was discovered in
Easton, MA, which led to Easton serving as a crucial part of the ironworks industry during the last 17th and 18th century.

Easton is the location where the American colonies first produced commercial steel. They used this steel in muskets.

The Ames Shovel Company opened in 1803 and provided the shovels used when workers constructed the Union Pacific Railroad.

The Ames family played an important role in this town for many years.

Easton was home to a Morse automobile manufacturing plant from 1902 to 1914, and this is only one industry that has contributed to the growth of the town.

Machine shops and cotton mills are two others. Throughout this growth, the town remained largely rural.

However, following World War II, the town took on more of a suburban feel. Many new people moved to the area, and it remains a thriving area today.

Easton Demographics

Sixty-two percent of Easton’s population falls between the ages of 18 and 64. Eighty-five percent of these individuals are white, while five percent identify as black, according to the 2020 census. Of those residents living in the town between 2017 and 2021, over eight percent were foreign born.

Seventy-seven percent of houses in the town were owner-occupied between 2017 and 2021.

The median value of houses during that period was $441,500, and there were 8,993 households in total.

According to the census, there were 2.55 persons living in each household.

Ninety-seven percent of residents in the town hold a high school diploma or higher. Over 50 percent of residents have earned a bachelor’s degree or higher. The median household income in 2021 dollars wass $112,116.

Education

Children may attend one of three public early elementary schools, which serve children in PreK-2.

Third through fifth graders attend the same public elementary school before moving on to the one public middle school in the town.

One public high school currently educates all children in the town. However, plans are in place to combine the three early elementary schools into one.

The Southeastern Regional Vocational Technical High School also serves the students of Easton. For those who have finished high school, Stonehill College is a Roman Catholic, co-ed college in the town.

Town Parks

When residents want to get outdoors and enjoy the sunshine, they often head to Borderland State Park.

This American history and nature preserve spans over 1,800 acres and surrounds the Ames Museum.

The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation oversees this state park, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.

Frothingham Memorial Park is another option for the residents of Easton and visitors to the town.

Mary Ames Frothingham dedicated this park to the town on September 27, 1930. She did so to honor her husband, who served in the United States House of Representatives for seven years in the 1920s.

This park offers space for children to play, families to picnic, and runners to get in a session on the track.

The town uses this park for high school graduations and baseball games. People find plenty to do while visiting, as the park continues to expand.

The park managers recently added a gazebo, which residents can use as a venue for various activities, and have plans in place to install a personal fitness facility.

Attractions

The Rockery, or Memorial Cairn as many people call it, is a tribute to those citizens of North Easton lost in the American Civil War.

American landscaper Frederick Law Olmsted created this unique war memorial to honor these individuals.

Visitors may take advantage of the public area and the carriage promenade, where they can see the beauty of North Easton.

The Children’s Museum of Easton has much to engage the imagination of children. They can put on their astronaut suits and blast off into space or spend time in the MakerLab using different tools and materials. The museum hosts regular events, and a family can plan a birthday party or sleepover at the facility.

The Eastern Shovel Town Cultural District offers something for every member of the family. This cluster of historic and majestic buildings is home to two museums, a co-op of artists, a farmer’s market that operates all year long, and more. The town hosts regular programs, events, and festivals in this delightful space.
