Palm Bay’s History

Palm Bay’s first inhabitants were the Ais people who moved to the area to live near the freshwater springs and the rivers.

In the 1700s, the area was known as Crane Creek, Elbow Creek, or Turkey Creek.

The first settler to the area arrived in the 1870s and set up an orange and banana grove.

Along with the wharf, more settlers were attracted, and with the arrival of the railroad in the 1890s, the area’s population began to grow.

The 1920s saw the area renamed Palm Bay. At this point, more than 40,000 acres of swamp land were drained for a variety of uses, including to control flooding and agricultural use. Unfortunately, this led to more flooding from storms in the area.

In 1926, the area was hit by a hurricane, which caused extensive damage.

By 1960, though, the town was incorporated.

At that time, there were about 2,800 residents, and the city began to go through an active development phase.

The 2000s saw significant growth for the area, and new plans for development include an eco-friendly community.

The growth also includes plans for road improvements, new construction for residential and commercial buildings, and more.

Demographics and More

The population in Palm Bay has grown significantly, with a nearly 30% increase between 2000 and 2010. Right now, there are around 1,570 residents per square mile.

The city is part of the Brevard County School District and has 10 elementary schools, one middle school, and three high schools.

The Eastern Florida State College is also located within Palm Bay.

Weather is warm throughout the year in Palm Bay, with an average high in the 70s or 80s all year long and an average low in the 40s during winter and 70s during the summer. Though it does get hot, many residents enjoy the more mild winter weather and the opportunity to go to the nearby beaches any time of the year.

The area averages between two and eight inches of rain depending on the month, with a total of around 55 inches per year.
