Town and History of Rockledge FL

Map of Rockledge

Located on the Space Coast a bit south of Cocoa Beach and about 50 miles southeast of Orlando, Rockledge, FL offers a tropical climate, numerous attractions, great job opportunities, highly rated schools, and numerous other benefits.

Here, we’ll tell you all about the city and explain how our dumpster rentals in Brevard County can make your Rockledge move an easier one.

The History of Rockledge

The town got its name from native coquina rock, which is found in abundance along its coast. Cephas Magruder and Gardner Hardee were some of its earliest settlers, building one of Rockledge’s most well-known houses. Incorporated as Rock Ledge in 1887, the town became the first municipality in Brevard County.

Tourism and agriculture were primary factors in the development of Rockledge’s economy, and the Intracoastal Waterway was (and still is) a big draw.

There were only 200 residents when President Grover Cleveland visited in 1888, but Henry Flagler and others built a tourist trade that increased the winter population tenfold.

When the Dixie Freeway was built in 1915, tourists came by automobile in even greater numbers.

Fast forward to today and Rockledge has turned into a vibrant town with a diverse and flourishing economy.

Whether you’re moving to Rockledge, relocating elsewhere, or renovating a commercial building in town, dumpster rentals will make the process easier and less stressful.

Tourism: Things to See and Do

As we mentioned, tourism is a major part of Rockledge’s history and economy. There are lots of fun experiences in and around the city, including:

  • The Brevard Zoo. A world-class attraction with something for everyone, the Brevard Zoo has a petting area, room for water play, kayaking, a zip line, train rides, demonstrations, and much more.

  • Cocoa Village. Here, you’ll find tons of attractions, shops, restaurants, and seasonal events including art fairs and live music.

  • Downtown Melbourne. In this area, you will find numerous specialty and gift shops, including the Indian River Soap Co., Coins & Curiosities, and the Christmas Cottage.

  • The Kennedy Space Center. On SR 405 in Titusville, the Kennedy Space Center provides demonstrations, tours, and other fun things to do. Stand under a massive rocket, experience a space launch up close, and meet past and future astronauts. At the Space Center, you’ll also find a gift shop, the Rocket Garden, an astronaut memorial, and the Astronaut Hall of Fame.

  • Port Canaveral. Near the Space Center, you’ll find numerous restaurants, fishing charters, beaches, hiking and biking paths, public boat ramps, and other family-friendly activities. Here, you can also embark on a cruise to the Caribbean or take an afternoon trip on one of many casino ships.

  • Cocoa Beach and the Pier. At Cocoa Beach, you’ll find a boardwalk and a pier, as well as miles of sandy beaches that include oceanfront parks, showers, restrooms, and picnic areas. If kicking back with a drink is more your style, check out the area’s jazz clubs, beachside cafes, and bars.

  • See dolphins and manatees up close. At Sundance Marina, you’ll have the opportunity to take a dolphin and manatee river tour on a 25-passenger Coast Guard-inspected tour boat. Tours run at 10am, 1pm, and 5pm every day.

  • Tour the Maxwell C. King Center for the Performing Arts. This 2000-seat arts center offers the best of children’s theater, opera, dance, and Broadway. You’ll also find a monthly art exhibit in the lobby.

  • The Indian River Queen. On Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons, take a cruise on the Indian River Queen. On the riverboat, you’ll be treated to great live music, delicious food, and the Southern hospitality for which this part of Florida is known.
